Your views: What ails you  Aug 14, 2008
This medicine is known as abortifacient drugs, leading to the destroying of life shortly after conception ... In reality, FLORIDA TODAY fears that protecting medics from distributing abortifacients will politicize the scientific fact that human life begins at fertilization and that abortion, in federal regulations, would be defined as anything that destroys a fertilized egg. (Florida Today)

    Breast-Feeding Kills  Aug 6, 2008
I am writing to express my support for the draft proposed regulation, by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which would protect the right of employees to refuse to facilitate any abortifacient chemical or activity ... To classify oral contraception as abortifacient, one would have to in which the drug fails to block ovulation, then fails to block fertilization, and yet somehow, having proved impotent at every other task, manages to prevent implantation ... They endure this... (Slate)

    Pro-Lifers Campaign Against Pill-Induced Abortions  Jun 8, 2008
"Women deserve to be told the truth about the abortifacient (abortion-inducing) mechanism of the pill," Anderson said. Jodi Wagner represented Pharmacists for Life International, a global organization that encourages pharmacists to find occupations that don't require dispensing birth control products, at the conference. Yale Student Insists Abortion Art Project Is Real  Apr 19, 2008
"Using a needleless syringe, I would inject the sperm near my cervix within 30 minutes of its collection, so as to insure the possibility of fertilization. "On the 28th day of my cycle, I would ingest an abortifacient, after which I would experience cramps and heavy bleeding ... " "To protect myself and others, only I know the number of fabricators who participated, the frequency and accuracy with which I inseminated and the specific abortifacient I used," the college senior wrote in her Daily... (Fox News)

Yale student's art project draws shock, outrage  Apr 18, 2008
She told classmates she had herself artificially inseminated as often as possible, then took legal herbal abortifacient drugs and filmed herself in her bathtub cramping and bleeding from the miscarriages. Her work will include a sculpture using video, her blood mixed with Vaseline wrapped in plastic, and a spoken piece describing what she had done. (Boston Globe)

Yale says student's story of art from abortions a hoax  Apr 18, 2008
The newspaper's account detailed "a nine-month process during which [Shvarts] artificially inseminated herself 'as often as possible' while periodically taking abortifacient drugs to induce miscarriages.". Shvarts told the paper her goal was to spark conversation and debate on the relationship between art and the human body. (Boston Globe)

Unwed mothers on the rise in state  Nov 22, 2007
It is that second possibility which had led some groups to push for it to be called an abortifacient. State law, however, does not classify it that way assuming there were a way to determine if someone who had unprotected sex actually got pregnant. (Douglas Daily Dispatch, AZ)

New Jersey Law Requires Pharmacies to Give Plan B  Nov 8, 2007
Plan B can sometimes function as an abortifacient by preventing a fertilized egg from attaching itself to the womb. The allows pharmacies to refuse to fill a prescription but prohibits them from justifying the refusal with "philosophical, moral or religious beliefs." The law says the decision "shall be based on professional experience, knowledge, or available reference materials.". (CNSnews.com)

Better contraceptive access in S.C.  Jul 14, 2007
My major concern is that many providers have wanted to hide behind this type of "conscience clause" in order to not provide what they erroneously construed to be an abortifacient medication. What a shame if they denied a woman access to medication that actually has the potential to prevent an abortion. (Orangeburg Times and Democrat, SC)

Women Urge More Funding for Contraception  Jun 11, 2007
Democratic pollster Celinda Lake, who surveyed American attitudes on contraception in late May, said her findings "reaffirm Americans' strong support for access to birth control, comprehensive sexuality education, and family planning services. "The overwhelming majority of American voters (88 percent) express agreement that comprehensive sex education - that includes information on abstinence, contraception, and how to avoid STDs, should be taught in schools," Lake said. According to her... (CNSnews.com)

Christians ordered to provide abortifacients on demand  Jun 8, 2007
Democrats in Congress have proposed a plan to fine pharmacies up to $500,000 if the pharmacists follow their conscience and decline to dispense abortifacient chemicals ... " It essentially is a very high dosage of birth-control chemicals taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex to prevent ovulation or implantation. If ovulation is prevented, no egg is fertilized and no pregnancy occurs. But if ovulation has taken place and the egg is fertilized, the morning-after pill works to block implantation... The Doctor Is Out: Plan B and the FDA  Apr 20, 2007
This mode of action has long been understood to be abortifacient. No one, however, will catch Planned Parenthood telling young women where to get their "emergency occasional abortifacient." ... This mode of action has long been understood to be abortifacient. (Townhall.com)

Planned Parenthood Launches 'Pill Patrol' Campaign  Mar 27, 2007
Pro-life groups such as Concerned Women for America consider emergency contraception an abortifacient because it can prevent a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus. According to CWA, about half the states have laws providing some form of protection for health care professionals who conscientiously object to providing the morning-after pill. (CNSnews.com)

Counselors have message for the young and pregnant  Feb 27, 2007
There also are a few cautions, such as one regarding the morning-after abortifacient: "How would you feel if your doctor gave you a drug and said, 'Here. This can cause hemorrhaging, infection, and possibly toxic shock. It's not 100 percent safe, but don't worry. Only ten women have died in the past few years. I'm sure you won't be one of them.' Would you feel safe? Would it be worth it? I might take this risk for a life-threatening illness, but pregnancy is not a life-threatening illness.". Now... (WorldNetDaily)

New Day in Washington for Pro-Life Marchers  Jan 22, 2007
Activists call it a response to recent government "errors" involving federal funding for embryonic stem cell research and approval for a "morning-after" pill, Plan B, which pro-lifers consider an abortifacient. March for Life organizers insist there should be "no exception" and "no compromise" to the "Thou Shalt Not Kill" commandment. (CNSnews.com)

    • Letter to the Editor - Rule for Catholichospitals explained  Jan 19, 2007
The conference opposes such mandates because, as Virginia Dolajek rightly states, such treatment can act as an abortifacient. What I tried to convey with the statement was that, although Catholic facilities will not provide an abortifacient drug, they can provide victims of sexual assault with what is commonly called emergency contraception if it has been determined that the treatment will not act as an abortifacient. (Bismarck Tribune, ND)

Chile's Catholic Church renews opposition to morning after pill  Jan 12, 2007
He bases these accusations on his insistence that the pill is an abortifacient, meaning it causes the abortion of a fetus, despite repeated studies by such respected bodies as the World Health Organization that dispute this claim. The morning-after pill debate has periodically reemerged in Chile since Minsas September 2006 announcement that the agency would provide the drug at all of their public clinics and require that privately-owned pharmacies make the drug available to their patients. (Yahoo News -- Chile)

EC pill use doesn't lower abortion rates (Cheryl Wetzstein)  Jan 8, 2007
Some pro-life activists oppose EC because they say life begins at conception, and since EC can prevent implantation, it could be an abortifacient. Pro-EC activists counter that pregnancy starts with implantation and EC cannot be an abortifacient because it doesn't affect implanted embryos. (Washington Times)

Two Different Abortion Pills Grow in Use  Jan 2, 2007
And all this is separate from the possibility that sometimes, the regular oral contraceptive pill acts an abortifacient, too ... This year, President Bush s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved over-the-counter sales of MAP to those 18 and older, making an abortifacient easily obtainable for adults and their underage girlfriends in potentially every drugstore in the nation ... Both forms of chemical abortifacient will likely become even more widespread in 2007. (Human Events Online)

Abortion foes' dirty tactics (10)  Nov 5, 2006
Remember: The most extreme Planned Parenthood foes truly believe that all hormonal birth control is a de facto abortifacient. And some of those folks believe that this country started to go downhill, morally, when it became legal to dispense condoms--to MARRIED PEOPLE. (Salon)

Full Story from Arizona Daily Wildcat  Sep 1, 2006
Though Plan B has been somehow mistaken for an abortifacient, it is actually just an upped dose of levonorgestrel, the same hormone in many birth control pills. In fact, as early as 1976, research showed that taking multiple birth control pills at once could be used for pregnancy prevention after sex. (U-Wire.com)

Morning After Pill approval over the counter sparks expected ...  Aug 31, 2006
"We find the FDA's unprecedented decision to make Plan B available without a prescription completely unacceptable. Women deserve quality health care, but over-the-counter (OTC) use of this potentially abortifacient drug will compromise informed consent and follow-up care when necessary," she said. "The FDA describes Plan B as 'a contraceptive drug' and equates its side effects to those of ordinary birth control pills. While Plan B can prevent fertilization, the manufacturer admits it may also... (Boca Raton News)

Battle shifts to making abortion drug available to teens without prescription  Aug 26, 2006
Some opponents -- who argue the pill acts as an abortifacient, killing a human life -- insist the age restriction won't work anyway. "If the FDA thinks that enacting an age restriction will work, or that the drug company will enforce it ... then they are living in a dream world," said Wendy Wright, president of Concerned Women for America. (WorldNetDaily)

Plan B backers continue push for access by teens  Aug 26, 2006
Some pro-life groups, including the Traditional Values Coalition, insist that Plan B is an abortifacient. "Privatizing abortions, as this decision does, thwarts all the good work that has been done to require parental consent" for teen abortions, said Andrea Lafferty, the group's executive director. (Washington Times)

'Morning after' easier to get  Aug 25, 2006
"Plan B is an abortifacient drug that is being marketed as a contraceptive even though the drug's proponents admit that the drug works both before and after conception," Chivers said. "The morning-after pill may prevent fertilization or it may interfere with the implantation of the embryo in her mother's womb.". (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

Plan B allowed over the counter  Aug 25, 2006
Social conservatives have said that such sales could increase promiscuity and sexually transmitted diseases, especially among teens and that the pill is an abortifacient. "This decision is long overdue. For nearly three years, politics took precedence over good science and good health policy," said Susan F. Wood, research professor at the George Washington University School of Public Health, who resigned her post as the FDA's assistant commissioner for women's health a year ago, when the agency... (Washington Times)

    Plan A: Scrap Plan B  Aug 12, 2006
Abortion is defined as the termination of a pregnancy and now the pill could no longer be viewed as an abortifacient since it operates before pregnancy (the newspeak version) begins. We can fast forward now to the current set of problems. (Human Events Online)

Kathryn Jean Lopez: Abortion's borders  Aug 11, 2006
Hasselbeck's lonely objection on the panel to its ready availability is one worth raising: While sometimes the pill works as a contraceptive, preventing fertilization, it can also work to prevent implantation of an already-fertilized embryo on the uterine wall -- thus acting as an abortifacient. Before folks rush to pop this pill (and to encourage its use as a "fire extinguisher"), that fact ought to be known and considered. (Sacramento Bee -- Opinion)

Barbara Miner: Fighting abortion with Plan B  Aug 11, 2006
Fiction: Emergency contraception is an abortifacient that can "snuff out the life of a newly conceived human being," warns the American Life League in a recent Action Alert. Fact: Emergency contraception, which should be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex, "cannot terminate an established pregnancy," according to the American Medical Association policy advocating nonprescription status. (Sacramento Bee -- Opinion)

Abortifacients: Like Picking Up Aspirin  Aug 7, 2006
Because the Food and Drug Administration isn t approving over-the-counter abortifacients with sufficient alacrity, Hillary Clinton and company are renewing their whine this week about the Bush administration s promotion of ideology over science. This is a rich charge coming from Democrats who won t even admit that Plan B, the mulishly direct name for an emergency contraceptive from Barr Pharmaceuticals, acts as an abortifacient ... But abortifacients aimed at teens. (Human Events Online)

ProFamily Voices Condemn FDAs Reconsidering Plan B for OTC Sales  Aug 3, 2006
Doing so would mean women, particularly those for whom "this powerful, abortifacient drug" is dangerous, would not have the benefit of any clinical advice to alert them to the risks. It is senseless, McQuade suggests, to put individuals' consciences, women and girls' health, and preborn babies' lives even more at risk by granting Plan B over-the-counter status, particularly when there is no benefit in doing so. (USA Religious News)

Kinder, Gentler Genocide in Mongolia  Aug 2, 2006
2 Million to Meet Emergency Health Needs of Civilians Displaced by Conflict in Lebanon : Such health needs include family planning contraceptives and almost certainly the abortifacient morning-after pill (MAP), which is now considered de rigueur. Based on the previous track record of UNFPA, it probably includes surgical abortion as well, though not officially. (Human Events Online)

Pro-Life Spokesperson Objects to FDA Action on Morning-After Pill  Aug 1, 2006
"Making this powerful, abortifacient drug available without a doctor's oversight could place women and their newly-conceived children at risk," Ms. McQuade said ... "Many are also unaware of their abortifacient action." "Women for whom the drug is dangerous would not have the benefit of any clinical advice to alert them to the risks," McQuade said. (PR Newswire)

Case In Point:  Jul 25, 2006
The RU-486 pill, an abortifacient medication, and emergency contraception (a. k.a. Plan B, used in cases of rape or unplanned sex or birth control failure), should be eliminated. (Ashland Daily Tidings, OR)

Avocados' nutritional benefits outweigh its fat  Jul 4, 2006
Don't try this at home, but isn't it fascinating that certain parts of the avocado tree, leaf, skin and seeds have been pulverized, roasted or otherwise concocted for use over the centuries to treat intestinal parasites, wounds, neuralgia, hypertension, sore throat, menstrual problems and even as an abortifacient. DID YOU KNOW. (Newsday -- Health)

World health: A lethal dose of US politics  Jun 17, 2006
Lee had earlier that year held up a list of essential WHO-recommended medicines drafted by an independent expert committee for more than two months because of US objections about two listed abortifacient drugs that could be used to induce abortions in emergencies. The US delegation to another recent WHA took issue with a WHO-proposed diet and health resolution, particularly concerning the acceptable level of sugar content in foods, which by the WHO's expert assessment would have cast US... Plan B - Lancet has a go at the FDA  May 22, 2006
This is despite the FDA's scientific advisory board voting almost unanimously for such approval and is viewed by many as an attempt to avoid offending anti-abortion supporters of President Bush, who claim that the contraceptive is an abortifacient (a substance that induces abortion). U.S. President George W. Bush nominated von Eschenbach to run the agency full-time earlier this year, but supporters of Plan B in the U.S. Senate, two Democrats have blocked any vote pending a decision on the drug. That process is "used for drugs that treat disease by providing some hope for life where there isn't any," Bartlett told Cybercast News Service. (CNSnews.com)

The bulk of the article describes a renewed effort not by religious people to stop contraceptives, but by social liberals to shut down abstinence education programs, or to force Catholic hospitals and pharmacists to prescribe emergency contraception (which may sometimes function as an abortifacient). Yes, a tiny minority of Americans do have moral objections to contraception. (Townhall.com)

    Herbal Myths  Apr 17, 2006
It has been used as an abortifacient, by poisoning the woman until her body cannot support the fetus and expels it. It is by no means a safe procedure, and is not endorsed by any reputable herbalist. (Suite101.com)

Access to abortion could be curtailed in US with new Supreme Court justice (AFP)  Jan 30, 2006
" Federal law has already moved in that direction, Gandy warned. Alito has also written that many forms of birth control -- including the pill, and intrauterine devices -- can be considered "abortifacient" because they prevent a fertilized egg from implanting, Gandy said. Should the courts decide that life begins at conception, women's choices could become even slimmer. "I remember what it was like in the 1960's in rural Louisiana," Gandy said. "Women did not have many options. My own best... (RSS - Yahoo News - Politics)
