Mutation To Mismatch Repair Gene Associated With Colorectal Cancer Mar 23, 2007
Patients with a variant of a DNA repair gene, known as MLH1, may have an increased risk of a subtype of colorectal cancer, according to a study in the March 21 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Mismatch repair genes fix problems that arise during DNA replication when bases are incorrectly paired. (Science Daily)
Faulty gene ups breast cancer risk Oct 10, 2006
BRIP1, like BRCA1 and BRCA2, is a DNA repair gene ... People with faulty DNA repair genes have an increased risk of cancer because their healthy cells are more likely to accumulate genetic damage that can trigger the cells to replicate uncontrollably - causing cancer. (Irish Health)
M. D. Anderson: Setting the benchmark in brain tumor treatment May 10, 2006
They also now understand that patients who initially respond to it have a specific DNA repair gene (0-6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase or MGMT) that remains silent during treatment. Temodar does not help patients with an active, efficient MGMT gene - their cancer cells are being mended as fast as the drug can injure them. (EurekAlert!)
Lung cancer drug may fight breast tumour in women May 1, 2006
The resulting tumours have no working copy of the DNA repair gene at all, while the healthy tissue around them has one normal copy. This appears to make them more vulnerable to carboplatin. (Times Online)
