Texas Children's discharges first pediatric patient with implanted mechanical heart device Nov 12, 2009
" Morales noted that the mechanical circulatory support team at Texas Children's Hospital Heart Center uses five different types of VADs in treating pediatric heart patients, the most of any pediatric hospital in the US. He points out that having this variety is important because he knows that TCH can individualize their VAD support for each child, taking their size and cause of heart failure into account. ### About Texas Children's Heart Center Texas Children's Heart Center is a self-contained... The News in Medical Tests Oct 4, 2009
Heart UltrasoundCT scans and MRIs may be popular tools for treating heart disease, but Dr. Thomas Risser, director of the cardiac noninvasive lab at Cambridge Health Alliance, predicts that heart ultrasound (or echocardiography) will grow increasingly important. Heart ultrasounds are inexpensive, usually covered by insurance, and don t expose patients to the ionizing radiation in CT scans, he says. (Boston Globe)

The integrated BLOOM and BLOSSOM echocardiography data set rules out a risk of valvulopathy in lorcaserin patients according to criteria requested by the FDA. Echocardiographic evaluations showed no association between lorcaserin and the development of heart valve insufficiency. Rates of new FDA-defined valvulopathy in BLOSSOM at Week 52 were as follows: lorcaserin 10 mg twice daily (2. (PR Newswire)

A Man with Coma after Cardiac Arrest Aug 13, 2009
Although no structural abnormalities were identified on echocardiography or cardiac catheterization, primary ventricular fibrillation has many causes that are not readily diagnosed,2 and when idiopathic it has a high rate of recurrence. 3 Therefore, the suitability of the donor's heart for transplantation needs to be determined by means of a thorough anatomical and electrophysiological assessment, which may be difficult to perform under. EVEREST Data Demonstrates Acute Reduction of Mitral Regurgitation Without Procedural Mortality in Patients Treated With the MitraClip(R) Therapy Aug 13, 2009
Transthoracic echocardiography was performed at baseline, pre-discharge, and at one, six, twelve months, and yearly thereafter up to five years. The data was analyzed by an independent echocardiographic core laboratory at the University of California, San Francisco under the direction of Elyse Foster, M.D.. (PR Newswire)

Fast, Simple Treatment Option For Patients Too Sick For Open-heart Surgery? May 9, 2009
In this group, echocardiography confirmed the improvement in mitral valve function after both 1 and 6 months. For example, the average volume of blood propelled backward through the mitral valve fell from 35 mL before the procedure to 23 mL after 1 month and 24 mL after 6 months (p<0. (Science Daily)
Swine flu: Your experiences Apr 28, 2009
I don't work in the shock team; I am in the echocardiography team, but I do get some news from my colleagues in the hospital. There have been some cases of young people dying from respiratory infections, but this happened before the alert and they were not reported because the necessary tests weren't done. Accurate Assessment Of Heart Disease Leads To Earlier, More Aggressive Therapy Apr 10, 2009
Each of these underwent a complete diagnostic work-up that included a medical history, physical examination, blood tests, electrocardiography at rest, two-dimensional echocardiography and myocardial perfusion imaging (gated SPECT) after stress and at rest. Patients also underwent coronary arteriography, which is currently the standard clinical procedure for diagnosing IHD, according to the American Heart Association. (Science Daily)
Improved Predictive Value Of Biomarkers In Heart Failure Makes Earlier Diagnosis And Better Management Possible Apr 7, 2009
First author Dr Milos Kubanek from Castle Hill Hospital, Hull, UK, added: "NT-proBNP monitoring will enable the identification of patients who are not responding well to treatment or help flag those patients needing more aggressive management and monitoring. We found NT-proBNP to be a much stronger predictor of mortality and CV-hospitalisation than echocardiographic measurements of, for example, ejection fraction, and therefore repeat NT-proBNP measurement may enable a reduction in the number of... After Heart Attack, Bone Marrow Stem Cells Increase Blood Flow Within Heart Apr 6, 2009
Doctors assessed healing and remodeling of patients' hearts with nuclear (single photon emission computed tomography) stress testing, magnetic resonance imaging, and echocardiography three months and six months later. Patients receiving higher doses of cells had greater improvement in blood flow within the heart than those patients treated with lower doses or those receiving medication alone. (Science Daily)

New Test Successfully Identifies Life-threatening Heart Disease Mar 19, 2009
Although previous studies have found that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), electrocardiography and echocardiography can accurately identify patients with advanced AVRC, these tests are much less sensitive for patients with earlier or less conspicuous disease, notes Saffitz. "An immunohistochemical test [based on plakoglobin levels] could, in the future, provide clinicians with an important new diagnostic tool," he adds. (Science Daily)

Are cardiac tests equally effective in men and women? Feb 7, 2009
I believe that cardiac tests such as the stress echocardiography, in which an ultrasound is done after exercise, or the stress thallium, in which a nuclear medicine is injected into the bloodstream and the patient exercises, are all good tests and are as effective in men as in women. There are data to suggest that women may have pain symptoms different from men and that they may be interpreted by physicians differently, but the objective tests work as well in both men and women.
