Stimulus funds aid MCG research Nov 10, 2009
Andrew Mellor, the director of the Immunotherapy Center and Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar Chair in Immunogenetics at MCG, got $367,500 to further his research in how a certain chemical might be thwarting the effects of vaccines. Called indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase, or IDO, it has been shown to be one way a fetus is protected from the mother's immune system and might be exploited by cancer and by HIV to evade the body's immune system. MCG, UGA team up on flu research May 7, 2009
The chemical might be one reason some vaccines fail to get an adequate immune response, said Dr. Mellor, director of the Immunotherapy Center and Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar Chair in Immunogenetics at MCG.. "Vaccine strategies are full of failures," he said. (The Augusta Chronicle)
Molecule That Suppresses Immune Response Under Study In Type 1 Diabetes Feb 16, 2009
"That was formal evidence that the dendritic cells with IDO were putting the brakes on the disease," said Dr. Mellor, Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar in Molecular Immunogenetics. "It leads to the hypothesis that by reinforcing the IDO mechanism in these mice, you can slow or even prevent the disease." He'll further explore IDO's role in type 1 diabetes by using several different methods to get rid of IDO and observe what happens. (Science Daily)
