Sometimes, healthy people go to hospital with minor complaints but end up dying of serious complications resulting from a doctors incompetence or the lack of the requisite equipment and drugs to provide treatment for the minor ailment that sent him to the hospital in the first place. All the children were malnourished, because they weren't getting any protein, but their mothers didn't realise that was the problem, and they couldn't have got hold of protein anyway, so they kept feeding them starch.
