Mr. Sosi said his outfit identified three different types of kwashiorkor among the children and stressed that improper infant feeding was one of the major causes of malnutrition. He appealed to the media to feed the public with nutritional messages to complement the efforts of the GHS towards behavioural change so that parents would feed their babies with local dishes with all the necessary nutrients. We found 22 children with marasmus and kwashiorkor [two nutrient deficiency diseases] in the hospital ... Kwashiorkor is a type of malnutrition in which the children swell because they retain liquids because of protein deficiency ... According to the health expert, cases of Kwashiorkor and Marasmus were evident in many cases and severely malnourished children were sent to district hospitals for further treatment. The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Agnes Binagwaho recently said that malnutrition does not necessarily kill but accelerates the rate at which children may die of other diseases hence contributing about 50 percent to childhood deaths.
