    Study: Fear Should Not Dictate the Prescribing of Antibiotics  Oct 21, 2007
    Risk of serious complications in the month after diagnosis were recorded: mastoiditis (infection of the mastoid bone of the skull) after ear infection, quinsy (an abscess at the back of the throat) after sore throat and pneumonia after upper respiratory tract infection and chest infection. Serious complications were rare after upper respiratory tract infections, sore throat and ear infection. (FOX News)

    Possible complications Mastoiditis - an infection of the mastoid bone of the skull, which sometimes occurs after ear infection Quinsy- an abscess at the back of the throat that can sometimes follow a sore throat Pneumonia - an infection of the lungs, which can occur after a chest infection. However, only 39 patients aged 65 and over would have to be treated with antibiotics for a chest infection to prevent a case of pneumonia. (BBC News -- UK)

    He had suffered from throat problems for some time and now, exhausted and depressed, he fell prey to what doctors described as "acute articular rheumatism" (actually angina plus quinsy), which led to heart failure. Perhaps his health was so poor that he would not have lived long in any case; but the strain of Carmen's opening and disappointing reception can only have made matters worse. (Independent)
