MRI useful and reliable in surgical planning of patients with rectal cancer  Jun 7, 2008
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the image quality of various 3T MR sequences for preoperative staging and planning of sphincter sparing rectal cancer resection," he said. The study included 39 patients (23 men, 15 women), who underwent 3T MRI. According to the study, rectal carcinoma was identified on MRI and confirmed histologically in all 39 patients. The study showed that MRI findings correctly identified 31 of 32 resectable cases (96.9%), and sphincter-sparing approaches were... (EurekAlert!)

Why That Potbelly Could Kill You!  May 16, 2008
The aforesaid study, published in the April 2008 edition of the journal Neurology, measured the sagittal abdominal diameter, or (in laymens terms, how far the potbelly sticks out), of 6,583 men and women in their 40s from 1964 to 1973, then looked at their records an average of 36 years later, when they found 1,049 dementia cases. . Wedded bliss linked to lower blood pressure  Apr 3, 2008
The study, which appeared online last week in Neurology, measured the sagittal abdominal diameter, or SAD (in laymen's terms, how far the pot belly sticks out), of 6,583 men and women in their 40s from 1964 to 1973, then looked at their records an average of 36 years later, when they found 1,049 dementia cases. Compared with those in the lowest one-fifth in SAD, those in the highest one-fifth were almost three times as likely to have dementia. (International Herald Tribune)

Study: Big bellies in 40s worsen risk of dementia  Mar 30, 2008
The researchers used a complicated method for measuring fat known as sagittal abdominal diameter. Those with a SAD score above 25 had the biggest bellies and the greatest risk. (Chicago Tribune)

Big bellies linked to Alzheimer's  Mar 27, 2008
The researchers used a complicated method for measuring fat known as sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD). Those with a SAD score above 25 had the biggest bellies and the greatest risk. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

Bigbellycould mean dementia later  Mar 27, 2008
The measurement used, known as sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD), is the height of the belly taken while a person is lying down and is considered a good indicator of abdominal fat. A SAD of 9. (MSNBC -- Health)

Libby has a date on Valentine's Day  Jan 29, 2008
Her sagittal suture has prematurely fused. Without surgery, Libby s head would grow front to back, causing her face to deform. (Park Hills Daily Journal, MO)

Michelangelo had brains on his mind  Jan 3, 2008
Yet four eminent scientists are convinced the swirls are not simply decoration but a transverse part of the sagittal section of a human brain. The brain resemblance was first suggested by another scientist, F.L.Meshberger, but now four British-based experts in neurology and radiology - Alessandro Paluzzi, Antonio Belli, Peter Bain and Laura Viva - have dissected the theory and found more brains in other Renaissance paintings. (Sydney Morning Herald -- Entertainment)

MRI Is Key To Understanding Cartilage Health  Jun 19, 2007
Sagittal MR images of the knee joint in a 30-year-old male obtained with a high-resolution, spoiled-gradient echo sequence and the same acquisition time at 1. 5T (a) and 3T (b). (Science Daily)

Muscular abs are cool, fat abs could kill you  Jan 4, 2007
In the current study, Iribarren and his team tested whether sagittal abdominal diameter, which is the distance from the back to the upper abdomen midway between the top of the pelvis and the bottom of the ribs, would improve the accuracy of BMI in predicting heart disease risk. Waist circumference is widely used to measure obesity in the abdominal area, Iribarren explained. (Xinhuanet, China)

Your belly size tells your heart's condition  Jan 1, 2007
Carlos Iribarren and colleagues of the research division of Kaiser Permanente of Northern California in Oakland studied another factor known as sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD), a measure of "visceral obesity. SAD is also called "supine abdominal height" which has been used to predict mortality in men, and is a measure of the girth around the abdomen - half way between the top of the pelvis and lower ribs. It is considered a more reliable measure of a person's girth than the waistline, and... (CNN-IBN)

Big bellies in link to heart disease risk  Dec 29, 2006
Iribarren and his team tested whether sagittal abdominal diameter - the distance from the back to the upper abdomen midway between the top of the pelvis and the bottom of the ribs - improves the accuracy of BMI in predicting heart disease risk ... Men with the largest sagittal abdominal diameter were 42 percent more likely to develop heart disease during follow-up compared to those with the smallest SAD. And a large SAD increased heart disease risk by 44 percent for women, Iribarren and his team... (The Standard)

After all that turkey, dire warning on a bulging waistline  Dec 28, 2006
The results came from measurements of the sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD) - the distance from the back to the upper abdomen halfway between the top of the pelvis and the bottom of the ribs - said by the research team to be more accurate than the often-used body mass index (BMI) measurement of obesity. Dr Carlos Iribarren, who led the study, said: "The message is really that obesity in the abdomen matters even more than obesity overall.". (Scotsman)

Brain Injury May Occur Within One Millisecond After Head Hits Car Windshield  Nov 9, 2006
Sagittal view of compressive pressure in head model (glass at right); pressure highest at impact of Coup site ... Each type of stress is displayed on two different views of the brain - the sagittal view - where the brain is cut between the left and right hemispheres - and an axial view in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the body just above the eyes and ears. (Science Daily)

Research shows brain injury may occur within one millisecond after head hits car windshield  Nov 8, 2006
Each type of stress is displayed on two different views of the brain - the sagittal view - where the brain is cut between the left and right hemispheres - and an axial view in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the body just above the eyes and ears. "Through our modeling we were able to predict early-time stress focusing within the brain during an impact event. However, we have yet to identify what specific levels of stress will lead to TBI," Taylor says. (EurekAlert!)

More of this story  Sep 29, 2006
This is called Trigonocephaly, which denotes a triangular shape at the top of the skull, caused by the closing of the metopic suture, which runs lengthwise along the top front of the skull, forward of the sagittal suture and anterior fontanelle (the "soft spot" at the top front portion of an infant's skull). Craniosynostosis is estimated to occur in one in 2,000 live births and is a genetic trait passed onto some infants at birth. (Helena Daily World, AR)

Relationship Of Brain And Skull More Than Just Packaging  Apr 17, 2006
The two types of craniosynostosis the researchers studied were early closure of the sagittal suture -- the suture that runs down the center of the skull from front to back -- and unilateral coronal craniosynostosis, early closure of one side of the suture that runs across the top of the head from ear to ear. Children with craniosynostosis almost universally have surgery to reopen the sutures and allow normal growth of the boney plates of the skull. (Science Daily)
