Science uncovers genetic secrets of killer parasites  Jul 17, 2009
The worms, Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma japonicum, are the major cause of the debilitating disease schistosomiasis, otherwise known as Bilharzia. Scientists, according to the international study published in the journal, Mature, have already uncovered targets for new treatments for the disease, which causes fever and fatigue. El-Sayed led the team that sequenced the Schistosoma mansoni, one of the two major parasites that cause snail fever ... The Schistosoma mansoni is found in sub-Saharan Africa, parts of the Middle East, Brazil, Venezuela and some Caribbean islands. (MEDLINEplus)

    * World News Quick Take  Jul 17, 2009
The Schistosoma mansoni is found in sub-Saharan Africa, parts of the Middle East, Brazil, Venezuela and some Caribbean islands. Some 280,000 people die from snail fever in Africa alone each year. (Taipei Times, Taiwan -- Business)

UCSF researchers help crack parasite genome, identify drug leads  Jul 16, 2009
One paper documents a multinational success, led by a team at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, in England, in sequencing the genome of the Schistosoma mansoni blood fluke, which has taken nearly a decade to achieve, researchers said. Three UCSF researchers contributed to that research by identifying and characterizing the parasite's complement of proteolytic enzymes, known as the "degradome," which in many other biomedical contexts has provided valuable drug targets. (EurekAlert!)

Genomes Of Parasitic Flatworms Decoded  Jul 16, 2009
Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma japonicum are the first sequenced genomes of any organism in the large group called Lophotrochozoa, which includes other free-living and parasitic flatworms as well as segmented roundworms, such as the earthworm ... M Berriman et al. The genome of the blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni ... (July 5, 2009) The first microsatellite-based genetic linkage map has been published for Schistosoma mansoni, a blood fluke that is known to infect over 90 million people in... (Science Daily)

Scientists decode genome of deadly parasitic worm  Jul 16, 2009
The paper reports the analysis of approximately 12,000 genes encoded in the nuclear DNA of Schistosoma mansoni, the flatworm that causes schistosomiasis. This comprehensive genome sequence enabled researchers to map out metabolic networks that are essential to survival of the parasite, thereby revealing potential areas of vulnerability. (EurekAlert!)

Killer parasites' genes decoded  Jul 16, 2009
Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma japonicum both cause the debilitating disease schistomiasis, otherwise known as Bilharzia. The work has already uncovered targets for new treatments for the disease, which causes fever and fatigue. (BBC News -- Health)
