Penn researchers use honeybee venom toxin to develop a new tool for studying hypertension Sep 18, 2008
The honeybee venom toxin, called tertiapin, or TPN, stops the flow of potassium ions across cell membranes by plugging up the opening of Kir channels on the outside of cells ... For example, while TPN inhibits Kir type 1 channels in kidney cells, it also inhibits other types of Kir channels in heart cells ... After more than a decade, Lu and his colleagues succeeded in bioengineering a TPN that selectively inhibits Kir channels important for salt recycling in kidneys. (EurekAlert!)

Kylie, the smallest of the trio recently underwent a small bowel transplant. Young girl with local ties receives bowel transplant Jul 24, 2007
Kylie has been fed primarily through a catheter with Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN). It takes more effort for the liver to metabolize TPN and one of the concerns for Kylie's future depended on getting the small bowel transplant as quickly as possible so there would be no substantial liver damage, which could have required an additional liver transplant. Early Feeding Could Help Reduce Liver Dysfunction In Critically Ill Patients Jan 26, 2007
Of these, 303 received total parental nutrition (TPN) via a central venous catheter, while 422 were given enteral nutrition (EN) through a nasogastric or nasojejunal tube, at the doctor's discretion ... Rates of liver dysfunction were higher in the TPN group (30%) than in the EN group (18%) ... The researchers found that patients who were suffering from sepsis and treated with TPN were at a greater risk of liver dysfunction. (Science Daily)
