Genetically, Taiwanese people are a high-risk group for vCJD. When scanning the gene sequences of vCJD patients, European and US scientists found three polymorphic subtypes of the prion protein gene (PRNP) at codon 129 X MM, MV and VV, referring to the pairing of amino acids methionine and valine. All patients infected with vCJD from bovine protein were found to have the MM genotype. (Taipei Times, Taiwan -- World)

The BDNF gene is characterized by a variant that codes for either the valine (Val) or methionine (Met) amino acids. Individuals carry two copies of each gene, with the Val variant being more common. (Science Daily)

In an unfolded region, the amino acid valine, for example, can usually mutate into any of the other 19 amino acids without any adverse effect. In a folded region on the other hand, it will mutate with high probability into other hydrophobic, or water-repelling, amino acids. (Science Daily)

Sickle Cell Disease Feb 7, 2009
Individuals with the sickle cell gene have a genetic defect that replaces the sixth amino acid of the beta chain, glutamic acid, with the amino acid valine. The result is hemoglobin S (Hb S), an abnormal hemoglobin with one or two beta chains altered this way. (Suite101.com)
